Palestinian Tribes, Clans, and Notable Families
18.01.2009
This paper discusses clan-like familial structures of the Palestinian
society in the West Bank and Gaza Strip: tribes, clans and notable families.
The author argues that clans are a double-edged sword because while they
enhance social stability and mitigate against societal collapse under
extreme conditions of state breakdown, clan militia and systems of tribal
justice directly undermine state building and state efficacy. The author
warns that the power of Palestinians clans, especially in Gaza, is far
greater today than it was even a decade ago and that as the state weakens,
clans take on greater roles, including physical and financial security.
