True Energy of Tywyn helps African hospital

Feb 19 2009 by Sion Barry, Western Mail

TYWYN-based True Energy has been commissioned by Unicef to provide
training on the installation and maintenance of solar-powered water
pumping systems.

In the first project of its kind in Djibouti, East Africa, True Energy
provided a two-week training course to individuals from the country's
Ministry of Agriculture and Unicef technicians.

Will Jeatt, systems analyst with True Energy, led the course.

He said: "We started out with four days of theory in the classroom,
followed by extensive practical sessions. The individuals involved then
installed the pumps with our supervision.

"The solar-powered water pumping system is now up and running, and can
be easily maintained by people on the ground. These people can also pass
their expertise on to others."

The solar pumps will provide clean water for a hospital.

Mr Jeatt said: "Djibouti is a very poor country so the solar- powered
system is ideal as the running costs are zero, and the cost of upkeep is
negligible.

"Prior to this the water was pumped by a diesel generator. This was
completely impractical as it broke down frequently, and there was
insufficient local expertise to mend it effectively. Furthermore, fuel
is hard to come by and is prohibitively expensive for an impoverished
region."

True Energy will soon be installing another project for Unicef, this
time in Eritrea.

True Energy has supplied energy solutions to B&Q and Carmarthenshire
County Council, is developing export markets in Africa, and counts the
World Health Organisation and the United Nations among its clients.

True Energy's renewable technologies include wind turbines, solar
photovoltaic (electricity), solar thermal (hot water), biomass and
ground source heat pumps (hot water).
