of our mother, sister, friend and comrade
Jirom Araya Asbu
1944 - 2011
Mama Jirom always said that she never wanted to owe unfulfilled duties to
her God and country and true to her words, she lived by that credence till
the day she departed this world - this life.
Jirom Araya Asbu was born in Adi Asfeda in Zoba Maekel, Eritrea in 1944.
Starting from a very young age, she continued to serve her country and
people in an exemplary way. She passed away on January 23, 2011 in London,
United Kingdom.
Mama Jirom was a mother, a sister, a friend, a comrade to all and sundry -
but above all, this paragon of a patriot was a woman who possessed a great
big heart. She never knotted her eyebrows except when she worried about her
people and country or prayed hard for their wellbeing. Otherwise, her smile
was constant and her energy boundless. Mama Jirom was simply a great
presence whether be it in church or community gatherings and her big
personality never failed to inspire the young and old of our community.
Jirom - as many people called her - never stopped working hard while she
always remained a proponent of every activity in aid of her people and
country; she never stopped even when her health started to fail. Mama Jirom
never tired at all and instead, despite the severe limitations her
deteriorating health placed on her, she continued to contribute her time and
energy for the cause ---
- one single cause the focus of which has always been the betterment of her
people and country.
This song is a tribute to our beloved mother and comrade - Mama Jirom,
Jirom, Btseyti Jirom - who sacrificed so much in support of the Eritrean
vision. When she was alive, she possessed a heart as intense as burning
amber - Mama Jirom was a true daughter of the spirit of her ancestors and
fought so hard to fulfil the Eritrean destiny.
As we sing along this tribute song to her, we shall remember the
quintessential Eritrean mother that Jirom represented almost to a fault. As
we remember Btseyti Jirom, we shall let her memory be our pride and our
pride the source of our passion for our people and country.
