If you were 10 years-old as my brother Heyab was in 2002 when the UN awarded the disputed territory to Eritrea you would have been in the 5th grade in an elementary school. Since then , Heyab has gone through Junior H.S., received his H.S. diploma, entered university, switched majors, and he is now in his second semester as a sophomore. In this timeframe, a person could have gone through undergraduate studies, medical school and completed their year of residency. The U.S. a guarantor nation to the Algiers Agreement , which took place when Heyab was 8-years-old is the main obstacle. The world was very different in 2002. Facebook wasn't around, President Obama hadn't even run for Senate yet, ipods were not-yet 6-months old, Saddam was still in power, and crude oil was a blissful $24 a barrel. I wonder how much longer a sovereign nation is supposed to stand by as it is illegally occupied? It boggles the mind , at least this mind , that 25% of our nation is occupied by those who claimed to wish to resolve
the conflict. We all know who is propping Ethiopia up in the Security Council and on the field, but instead we are the ones who are sanctioned? The crazy thing is that they expect us to come to another rigged negotiating table over Djibouti? We were foolish in 200 but it is a bit much to ask us to take this foolishness into the new millennium. Our government is vilified and called every name under the sun, except for one, patient. Isn't it time for something to be done? We are criticized for a conscription army , when the necessity of that army id because of the threat imposed by those criticizing us? I realize we have no oil and an erect back, but it is still very frustrating. I wonder if my brother will have completed his graduate studies before any action is taken to make Ethiopia comply with the UN's own decision?
