PRESS RELEASE
Since October 23, 2008, a media campaign orchestrated by the President
of Djibouti, Ismael Omar Guelleh, is waged against the combatants and
members of the FRUD, accused of supporting Eritrea and of terrorizing
the population.
His special envoys: the Chief of Staff in the Ministry of defense, the
Minister of Interior and the Prime Minister were dispatched to Tadjourah
where they threatened the traditional chiefs and the population of
reprisals if they did not collaborate with the Civil and Military
authorities by denouncing the members and the sympathizers of the FRUD.
During this time, the President who expressed himself at the United
Nations Security Council and threatened to wage war against Eritrea, if
the border conflict is not
resolved within three months.
The bellicose behaviour of Ismael Omar Guelleh, which already had
dramatic consequences (about a hundred Djibouti soldiers killed, and
300 wounded) during the skirmish with the Eritrean army on the 10th of
June 2008, is worrying for the population of Djibouti of which half is
threatened by famine.
The inhabitants of the border regions, forsaken for 31 years and who are
afflicted by hunger and thirst, are victims of part of Djibouti military
brutal intrigues.
The so-called border conflict is neither in the interest of the people
of Djibouti nor of that of the Eritrean people.
The litigations relating to the delimitation of the borders and, in
particular, the claims to the Doumeira islands must be the subject to
international arbitration.
The FRUD considers that the two States have the duty to peacefully
settle this dispute without wasting lives from both sides.
The only war which is worth fighting in Djibouti, is the fight against
poverty, thirst, for democracy
and equality among the citizens of Djibouti.
The FRUD, a politico-military organisation, is not subservient to any
State, Power, or agencies but fights for a national and democratic State
in Djibouti.
The combatants and the executives of FRUD, stigmatized by the government
envoys willingness to terrorize the population, have courageously
maintained the political line of the organization which remains the only
alternative after the failure of the two peace agreements, ( 1994 and
2001) and the only hope of change for all those who have
endured this fierce dictatorship for 31 years, hence the fight continue
until objectives
set are achieved.
The FRUD ---
condemns the hawkish and irresponsible attitude of the Head of the State
of Djibouti. Condemns the threats and harassments, and calls for the
denouncement of the acts of violence against the civilian populations
suspected of sympathy with the FRUD.
The FRUD considers that the time of tergiversations and the cautious
approach is gone and calls on all Djiboutians to devote themselves to
the basic points: multiform
support to the Combatants and the members of the FRUD who are fighting
under difficult conditions and are spearheading the fight for change in
Djibouti for all.
