What does it mean to be Eritrean when you're the child of a mixed couple unrecognized, Italian is practically your first language and you've spent half your life in Italy? And what it means to be Italian if you do not leave Eritrea for decades, you've never met your family on the peninsula and you have black skin? "The words of Eritrea" is the story of a journey in search of Italian words that still stand embedded in the Tigrinya language, a living remembrance of our colonial past not too far in this country in the Horn of Africa. These words are splinters of sound in an Italian colony, and spent a part of Italy that exists "out if" kept in a little dreamy prism of everyday life in cities like Asmara and Massawa.
The author in the course of his journey he discovers that Eritrea firefighters are called bimbori that roundabouts with the flower bed in the middle are called girafiori and that the bartenders do anything craft that serve coffee and aperitifs. Meet people who bought Italian citizenship from fathers to "hire", veterans happy to have been pierced by a bullet Ethiopian, and kids who translated Dante's language Tigrinya. Listen to the voices of a country that in the last decade has increasingly closed in on itself under the pretext of having to protect against alleged foreign cultural influences and became more and more impervious to information and civil rights.
