Man pleads guilty in wife's stabbing at NY market
Updated 3:06 am, Friday, April 5, 2013BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — A man who repeatedly stabbed his estranged wife inside an upstate New York supermarket in front of their 3-year-old son has pleaded guilty to attempted murder.
The Erie County District Attorney's office says Thursday that Awet Gebreyesus (ah-WEHT' geh-breeh-EEH'-soos) faces up to 25 years in prison, and likely deportation, for the January 2012 attack.
Prosecutors say Gebreyesus was meeting his wife at a Buffalo Wegmans store to hand over their son as part of a court-ordered visitation agreement when he stabbed her numerous times. She spent two weeks in the hospital with injuries that included a partially severed artery in her brain.
District Attorney Frank Sedita III says intervention by bystanders prevented the 26-year-old woman's death.
The 33-year-old Gebreyesus is believed to be a refugee from the African country of Eritrea.
