UK exports to Sub-Saharan Africa have risen by 65 per cent since 2009 to £9.1 billion, according to HMRC.
Eduteq supplies complete laboratories and all the training needed to operate them. The company is working with the Eritrea government to establish an educational centre in the capital Asmara, as well as a further two sites in more remote parts of the country.
The centre will train people in automotive engineering, workshop machinery, welding and carpentry to increase the number of skilled technicians in the country. Eduteq has secured a £2.4 million finance package with HSBC’s Leicestershire Commercial Centre to help fulfil the contract. The firm has also signed two contracts with the Ghanaian government.
Another example of a British business venturing into Africa is Cambridgeshire-based Armtrac, a specialist in equipment for clearing explosive landmines.
