Ben Selam Khaled - Tunisian Human Trafficker - Boat Tragedy - Lampedusa 2013
by Simon Tesfamariam,
So it turns out that Khaled Bensalam, the Tunisian human trafficker aboard the capsized Lampedusa ship, is going to go free and probably going to continue doing what he’s doing, according to an article in The Times. The article states that “prosecutors fear that they will have lost track of the 155 witnesses by the time the trial actually opens, meaning that the suspected trafficker will simply be expelled.” Yes, all 155 are unreachable. Bensalam, a Tunisian who claims he was told to traffic people after being held at gunpoint, was caught in April of this year, released (for reasons unknown), and will now go free again. Keep in mind that according to emerging reports and migrants’ accounts so far, Bensalam: (1) took phones away from all the migrants; (2) threw his own mandatory GPS equipped satellite phone into the water (always on every ship in case of emergencies, which are common); (3) set a blanket/shirt on fire to supposedly catch people’s attention, in spite of the fact that the boat’s bridge/deck was apparently covered in gasoline for reasons unknown (engine located below in the ship’s hold; not above; up until recently, they always said “someone” or “migrant” started the fire); (4) threw the burning cloth into the gasoline igniting the boat and causing a panic that led to the capsizing of the ship (some say because it was burning his hand); and (5) swam to shore and survived. Those are the facts so far and details are still emerging. Let’s not speculate or jump to premature conclusions.
Below is a picture of Bensalam taken by La Republicca. I think it’s safe to say that Italian authorities should conduct a more through investigation of what actually took place on Oct, 3, 2013.
