he Ethiopian government has said that its troops are ready to repulse any
“possible but unlikely” attack from its neighbours over the building of a
controversial dam on the River Nile. Local media on Sunday quoted the
Ethiopian Minister of Defense Siraj Fegessa as telling parliament in Addis
Ababa that although his country was not expecting any attack, it was still
on the alert to protect the dam.
Tension has been simmering between Ethiopia and Egypt since Addis Ababa
announced it was building a dam over the shared waters of the Nile two
years ago.
Egypt had threatened to resort to military means to resolve the dam dispute
during Islamist Mohamed Morsi’s year-long presidency.
Egypt fears its “historical rights� to the river which is a source of
water and livelihood to its citizens will be affected by the construction
of the dam.
The Upper Nile stream countries have called for the colonial-era treaty
over the River Nile, which gives over 87 percent to Egypt be re-negotiated.
