Somalia: No-confidence motion against President Hassan looms-Sources
 Apr 14, 2014 - 12:30:04 PM

MOGADISHU, Somalia April 14, 2014 (Garowe Online)-Lawmakers in Federal
Parliament of Somalia are planning to table a no-confidence motion against
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud amid growing concern over the credibility of
his administration according to independent sources, Garowe Online reports.

The sources within Mogadishu-based Federal Government tell GO that Federal
MPs who hail from Hawiye clan held a private meeting with President Hassan
at Villa Somalia Presidential Compound, disclosing the looming political
threats to him and asking President Hassan to respond to the emerging bold
challenge.

Speaking to GO, the sources declined to be named in print further unveiled
the magnitude of the no-confidence motion against the head of state whose
tenure of office has been gripped by weak counter-terrorism policy and
ineffective domestic policy, with heavy weight Somali politicians and some
of the International community members involving in the move.

At least 40 MPs are said to have filed the motion although Presidential
aides and President's close friends have showed off shrewd tactics to doom
the plan to failure.

The US director of national intelligence James clapper in early February
declared that persistent political infighting, weak leadership from
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, ill-equipped government institutions and
pervasive technical shortfalls threatened the credibility and the
effectiveness of Somalia federal government.

As a result of looming threats of instability, the US state department
issued a travel warning to Americans going out on trip to Somalia on 7th of
February 2013. "Terrorist operatives and armed groups in Somalia have
demonstrated their intent to attack Somali authorities, the African

Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), and other non-military target," the statement
from the US government revealed.

On 22nd of February, Al Shabaab gunmen in military fatigues launched a
deadly assault on the heavily fortified presidential compound in Mogadishu
and killed senior government officials.

Meanwhile, large scale theft of government funds dealt blow to the ties
between President Mohamud and International donors but his administration
could hardly wean off their financial support.

Though Political infighting within key government offices far and away
unleashed another menace in the war-ravaged horn of African nation, the new
motion would be a paradigm shift or political miscalculation.
