With the New Year approaching Eritreans might feel like on a roller coaster
witnessing the current debate about the Danish report on Eritrea published
last week.
While both sides - the Eritrean pro and anti fractions - are fighting to
defend their views as good as ever, the highly publicized report is
beginning to spark a huge controversy in Denmark.
According to Danish media claims the report has triggered an internal rift
within Denmark's Immigration Service, with two key officials on sick leave
due to disagreements over the report within the Immigration Service.
The two officials were part of a team of three sent on a fact-finding
mission to Eritrea from 1 to 17 October. The mission published its
controversial report, which concluded that refugees from Eritrea are not
necessarily entitled to protection in Denmark.
The two officials on sick leave criticized the way information was gathered
in Eritrea and expressed their dissatisfaction with the findings.
However, the third official and head of the fact finding mission, Jakob Dam
Glynstrup, decided to publish the report despite opposing views within the
team, according to Danish newspaper Berlingske.
And to make matters worse, the latest development out of Denmark is that the
country's Justice Minister Mette Frederiksen has asked the Danish
Immigration Service for a report on the disputed Eritrea-report.
"There has been recently serious criticism of the Danish Immigration Service
report on Eritrea. I have therefore decided to ask the Board for an
explanation of the events in the report." said Mette Frederiksen, as
reported by Berlingske "I have asked that the report is made available as
quickly as possible"
