20th Commemoration of Rwanda Genocide against the Tutsi observed in Asmara

28 June 2014 – The 20th Commemoration of the Rwanda Genocide against the
Tutsi ethnic group was observed yesterday here in Asmara. The commemoration
event that witnessed various activities was jointly organized by the PFDJ
and UN Office in Eritrea under the theme “Remember- Unite- Renew.”
The commemorative activities comprising tree planting near Beleza area,
environmental hygiene and candle light vigil also featured at Hotel Asmara
Palace.
Ministers, PFDJ heads, diplomats and heads of UN missions in Eritrea were
present on the occasion, during which a short film and pictorial exhibition
depicting the 1994 genocide were shown in the event.
Mr. Yemane Gebreab, Head of Political Affairs at the PFDJ, lit torch in
memory of the genocide victims and those present conducted prayer along
with candle light. In a speech he delivered in connection with the
commemoration, Mr. Yemane pointed out that the sad event in Rwanda left
behind dark history and severe damage. He went on to explain that the
Government of Rwanda is today engaged in endeavors to promote national
reconstruction by leaving behind the dark episode of the genocide. The PFDJ
official further indicated that the Government of Eritrea is currently
exerting efforts to promote close bilateral relations aimed at ensuring
mutual benefit for both peoples.
Likewise, Ms. Christine N. Umutoni, UN Resident Coordinator, noted that
over a million Rwanda citizens lost their lives during the tragic genocide.
She also indicated that the international community is working actively to
bring to justice the perpetrators of the sad act of crime. Moreover, Ms.
Christine expressed appreciation for the close cooperation that the
Eritrean government and the PFDJ demonstrated in organizing the
commemorative event.
Similarly, the Chairperson of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW),
Ms. Leul Gebreab, delivered a speech stressing the need for the
international community to exert the necessary efforts towards averting a
repetition of such tragedy anywhere in our planet.
Reports also indicated that the staff of UN Office in Eritrea and workers
of the NUEW, NUEYS and NCEW planted around 400 tree seedlings around Beleza
area in connection with the commemoration.
