Last time I spoke to Luul Gebreab, Chairperson of the National Union of
Eritrean Women, she said to me "key'te ham'ka". You hear that young
Eritrean women? She is speaking to every single one of us.
The generation of Eritrean women that came before us fought alongside men
to liberate Eritrea. They sacrificed their lives, limbs and being with
their families to ensure us the privilege of calling ourselves Eritrean.
The generation of Eritrean women now work hard alongside men to build a
nation. They sacrifice their youth and personal desires to complete the
tough essentials needed to build a country from the ground up. Eritrean
women have always been and continue to be the backbone of our society.
*Young Eritrean women in the diaspora - what will our legacy be?* We have
enormous shoes to fill, but we can't let that stop us. We need to make our
past and present-day heroines proud. Let us never take for granted the
honor of being an Eritrean woman. From the clothes that we wear, the
education and careers we pursue, and the children we raise let us all
respect the heritage and responsibility that comes along with being
Eritreawit.
Happy International Women's Day!
