Cairo: The Arab League Ministerial Council yesterday praised Qatar’s efforts to establish peace and stability in Sudan.

It also welcomed the signing of a peace agreement between the Sudanese government and the Justice and Equality Movement in Doha on April 6 last year.

It urged other rebel groups to join the agreement, including the Doha Document for Peace of 2011.

The council called on Arab countries to communicate with the international community and the UN to prevent any funding of such groups.

It noted outcome of the International Donor Conference for Reconstruction and Development in Darfur, held in Doha last April.

The council, which was holding its 141st session, stressed its commitment to support the Sudanese government, especially in negotiations over the Abyei area, among other territorial disputes with South Sudan. It also welcomed Qatari mediation to end the dispute between Djibouti and Eretria through peaceful means and restore the situation in Ras Doumeira and Doumeira island.

The council welcomed the agreement signed between Djibouti and Eritrea on 6 June 2010 under Qatar’s auspices and backed its implementation to address issues between both countries, hoping to see positive impact on the situation in the Horn African region. It urged both sides to implement the agreement which mandates Qatar to end the crisis that erupted in February 2008 in Ras Doumeira and free captives. It also welcomed the joint statement of the League and African Union’s Peace and Security Council on 19 December 2010 on the dispute and asked the League Secretary-General to follow up developments in line with Qatari mediation and submit a report.
