The capital of Eritrea had to clear piles of ice that buried its streets
after an intense storm of hail swept through the Horn of Africa city on
Wednesday.

The storm caught the city of Asmara by surprise with its heavy flooding and
large clusters of ice, some nearly three feet thick, that blocked many of
the streets and stranded vehicles, according to video shared by
government-run television station ERI-TV.

The city cleared away some of the ice that clogged the streets and created
traffic jams after the storm.

The video shows water and ice flowing down the streets of Asmara as people
tried to ride their bicycles and walk through the sludge.

The storm lasted for about 90 minutes, according to the BBC.

Video shared by the government-run television station shows the flooded
streets in Asmara.

The country has a short rainy season in March and April leading up to a
large rainy season in July and August. However, a storm like this is
unprecedented and may have broken local records.

The plateau that Asmara is located on receives about 16 to 20 inches of
rain per year.
