The Kenya national anthem played eight times out of eight as the country
affirmed their supremacy in distance running at the Africa Cross Country
Championships in Kololo, Uganda yesterday. Kenya were unmarched as they
tore their opponents apart to bag 14 out of 16 medas on offer.

Moses Letoyie started Kenya's assault by claiming the junior men's title in
22:36.80, ahead of fellow Kenyan Andrew Lorot who placed second in 22:50.19.

However, Berhane Afewerki of Eritrea spoilt the Kenyan party he snatched
bronze timed at 22:56.45.

But this didn't prevent the gallant juniors from claiming the team title as
Langat Kiprono came home fourth in 22:58.70 followed by Langat Kipkemoi
(23:01.97) to cap a remarkable outing. Eritrea and Ethiopia were second and
third in the team rankings in the race.

The script read almost the same in the junior women's race as Jebet Tirop
breasted the tape in 18:50.74 to take gold. She was followed by Ethiopia's
Alemitu Heroye, who finished second in 19:04.73. Kenya's Nancy Nzisa
(19:16.18) took bronze with Roseline Chepngetich finishing fourth in
19:39.71. Kasait Rengeruk clocked 19:50.74 top complete the top five places
as Kenya once again ran away with the team title.

World junior cross country champion Faith Chepngetich lived to expectations
as she destroyed her opponents on her debut in the senior women's 8km race
to cross the finis line in 25:33.02. Her guidance at the front inspired a
clean sweep that saw Janet Kisa take silver in 25:41.30 and Alice Nawowuna
bronze in 25:46.48.

There was no looking back for an inspired Kenyan Edith Chelimo who
contributed greatly to the team title, timing 26:02.48 for fourth, to
relegate surging Alemu Bekele of Ethiopia to fifth in 26:10.84. Kenya won
the team title followed by Ethiopia and hosts Uganda.

It was same story in the senior men's 12km race as Leonard Barsoton led
Kenya into claiming the first five slots after bagging the gold medal in
34:26. Barsoton was followed by Cornelius Kangogo in 34:56. Philemon Rono
sealed the podium places in a time of 35:02 with Solomon Kirwa (35:15) and
Philip

(35:20) respectively fourth and fifth respectively.
