Egypt: Armed Forces Destroy 13 Underground Tunnels, 61 Feddans Cultivated

The Egyptian border guards continued efforts to combat smugglers and
criminals on all fronts in a bid to tighten grip on borders.
Second Field Army forces destroyed 13 underground tunnels on the Rafah-Gaza
borderline in North Sinai.
Also a storehouse containing different goods that were going to be smuggled
through tunnels was busted. A car and four motorbikes, all without license
plates, used for smuggling purposes were seized.
In a clampdown on drugs in Sinai, the Armed Forces destroyed 32 farms
covering 61 feddans cultivated with cannabis and opium poppy.
A fishing boat in Ras Sedr off the Red Sea shores was seized with 2.5 tons
of cannabis on board.
In the vicinity of the Northern Military Zone, three criminal elements were
arrested at a checkpoint in Abu Qir with a pistol and drugs in their
possession. An attempt to smuggle 74 persons, including 69 Egyptians and
five Syrians, was foiled.
In the environs of the Western Military Zone, a pickup loaded with 100
boxes of smuggled cosmetics was seized in Salloum. Three trucks carrying
13,000 cartons of smuggled carcinogenic cigarettes were impounded.
In the south, border guards at the Southern Military Zone detained 184
infiltrators - 89 Eritreans, 71 Sudanese, 12 Somalis, five Ethiopians, 65
Libyans and two Syrians - on nine trucks.
Four Sudanese nationals on a gold excavation mission were arrested as well.
Three metal detectors were found with them.
Also three trucks loaded with more than five tons of subsidized food was
stopped before being smuggled to Sudan.
