Ten Ethiopian university students were killed and 70 people injured on
Thursday in acts of violence that erupted in Oromia region in close
proximity to the capital Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian government said.
It added in a statement that some university students had engaged in acts
of violence following what the government described as incitement from
"anti-peace" parties.
"Seven students were killed in Ambo University, while three more students
were killed as they tried to loot a bank in the region," Ethiopia's state
television cited the government's statement.
The government's statement, however, did not mention how the ten students
were killed.
It said the 70 students were injured in the explosion of a grenade thrown
on students watching a soccer match inside Haramaya University in the same
region.
It added that the "anti-peace groups tried to incite the students against
the government on the background of current discussions between the
government and the authorities in Oromia on development plans in the
region."
