Pair help police find attackers

Two men were assaulted as they walked home in Hamilton early this morning.

But that didn't stop them following their attackers so police could arrest
them.

Shift Manager, Acting Senior Sergeant Lara Beisly, said the incident began
shortly before 1am when two men, originally from Eritrea, were accosted by
two intoxicated males in Chartwell as they walked home.

"The offenders had wanted cigarettes from the two men and when the victims
said they didn't have any they were punched and chased down the street,''
Beisly said. "The victims rang 111 and alerted Police and then courageously
followed their attackers, relaying their movements to the Northern
Communications Centre which was able to guide responding officers."

Beisly said the first officer on the scene caught one of the offenders on
Ascot Rd but the other ran through a number of properties on to Snell Dr.

"Despite quite a number of people out and about on the street, a responding
police dog and handler arrived, picked up a scent and began to track,
leading officers to a McIntosh St address.''

They found the alleged offender sitting at the kitchen table./p>

Beisly praised the quick thinking of the victims who ''had the presence of
mind'' to relay the offenders' direction of flight following the attack.
