37th Fifth Third Riverbank Run Enjoys Perfect Weather
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - It is the biggest, longest-running sporting event in
west Michigan, and in it's 37th running Saturday the Fifth Third Riverbank
run may have set a record for the most pleasant weather. An estimated
40,000 people watched over 21,000 runners compete in a variety of races.
The highlight - the 25 kilometer American Championship.
The men's winner was Samson Gebreyohannes Gezaha, originally from Eritrea,
now living in Tampa FL. His time was 1:14:08.
The second overall and the first American tied an American record -
Christopher Landry of Ann Arbor came in at 1:14:18.
The female winner was Kellyn Johnson-Taylor of Flagstaff, AZ. She was all
by herself the entire race, finishing in 1:25:25.
Greg Meyer, the elite athletes coordinator, hopes to convince them all to
return next year, and hopes the weather is as good as today. "Just a great
day - the weather has never been better - the athletes that came, came to
race" Meyer said.
