Serious incident on Parliament Road in Middlesbrough
A teenager accused of murdering a woman at a Middlesbrough house has died
in prison.
Dawit Khasay, 19, had been remanded in custody at Holme House Prison in
Stockton, ahead of a scheduled court appearance this morning.
A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police confirmed that a 19-year-old man died in
prison in the early hours of Sunday morning.
She said: "Police were contacted at 6.30am on Sunday May 11 by Holme House
Prison following the death of a 19-year-old inmate.
"Enquiries are ongoing and a post-mortem examination will be carried out.
"At this stage the death is not being treated as suspicious."
The force has yet to make any further arrests in connection with the
woman's death and today said inquiries were 'ongoing'.
The Gazette is waiting for comment from the Prison Service.
The teenager, who was accused of the murder of Natsnet Tekle Nahisi,
appeared at Teesside Crown Court last week.
He had been charged with murder after the woman's body was found at a
property on Parliament Road, Middlesbrough, in the early hours of Saturday,
May 3.
Mr Khasay, of Maple Street, central Middlesbrough, was originally from
Eritrea and spoke the East African language Tigrinya.
He appeared for a short hearing in front of Judge Simon Bourne-Arton QC,
the Recorder of Middlesbrough, on Wednesday last week.
He had not yet entered any pleas and was remanded in custody.
The case was adjourned for a further hearing when an interpreter was able
to come to court.
It came after police officers were called to a "multi-occupancy house" on
Parliament Road at around 3.35am on May 3 by a concerned member of the
public.
Police have confirmed that Natsnet Tekle Nahisi was a foreign national, and
was in her 20s.
She was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
A post-mortem examination concluded that the woman had died from injuries
sustained during an assault.
