The Association of Eritreans and their Friends in Michigan (AEFM) celebrated the 23rd Anniversary of Eritrea's Independence in
Southfield. Attendants, both Eritreans and their friends, came
from the surrounding areas (including from Ann Arbor, Greater
Detroit, Greater Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Windsor-Canada,
Ypsilanti, etc.) The hall was beautifully and colorfully decorated
with Eritrean flags. Rhythmic and vibrant Music was provided
by Habtu Tekle, Mokonnen Woldai, and Fithum Zerai "Wedi Zagir."
Although the atmosphere was celebratory, the solemnness of the
event was ever present.
The spirit and meaning of the event was briefly presented as well
as the identity, legality, and goals of AEFM as it pertains to its public-spirited role towards Eritrea.
Among the most wonderful scenes was the very young children dancing to
Eritrean traditional and national songs. In fact it is said that
in many cases the young ones can't wait until the next such
celebration. AEFM has been celebrating Eritrea's Independence
Anniversary for the last 16 years (ever since it was founded).
