Celebration: National Day of Eritrea
Manila Bulletin - 23 hours ago
Today is the National Day of Eritrea which commemorates the country's 1993
declaration of independence from Ethiopia. The 30-year struggle ended with
a referendum on independence in which approximately 1.1 million Eritreans
voted for freedom from Ethiopian rule.
Situated in the Horn of Africa, Eritrea is bounded on the east by the Red
Sea, on the southeast by Djibouti, on the south and west by Ethiopia, and
on the north and northwest by Sudan. The population of Eritrea is around
6.2 million with Tigrinya and Tigre people making up 60% and 30%
respectively. The country is multi-ethnic with nine recognized ethnic
groups.
The economy of Eritrea is dominated by subsistence agriculture - in farming
and herding - which employs around 80% of the population. Eritrea is a
member of the African Union (AU), successor of the Organization of African
Unity (OAU), the United Nations (UN), and Intergovernmental Authority on
Development (IGAD).
We congratulate the people and government of Eritrea led by His Excellency,
President Isaias Afewerki, on the occasion of its National Day.
