With regard to Sandor Jaszberenyi’s excellent Nov. 19 op-ed “The Mother Who
Fought ISIS to the Death”: As a former Marine officer deployed to Iraq I
had the honor and privilege of serving with the Peshmerga in northern Iraq
and I echo Mr. Jaszberenyi’s sentiments and observations. Interestingly, I
had on occasion been deployed to Eritrea, and the true warriors in Eritrea
are the women; they are widely acknowledged as being the fiercest fighters.
In fact, there is a monument in Asmara, Eritrea, which honors the military
exploits of women in the Eritrean armed forces. Working side-by-side with
Peshmerga and with Eritrean brave and fearless women, I can attest to their
military acumen and fighting spirit.

Please, let us not overlook the women of America’s armed forces: After 28
years the in the Marine Corps working with, deploying with and fighting
with American fighting women, I will put them right up there with Peshmerga
and Eritrean women warriors in their soldierly virtues.

Lt. Col. David M. McCarthy

USMC (Ret.)
