After winning gold in the first event of the world championships --
men's marathon champion Ghirmay Ghebreslassie took time out from his
busy schedule to spend the day taking in what the Chinese capital has
to offer. CCTV reporter Mike Fox gave him a guided tour of one of the
world's most famous cities.
The man who was victorious running through the streets of Beijing was
back on them just a day later, but this time at a much slower pace.
With a population of just over five million, the relatively-new nation
of Eritrea is a far cry from the crowded and diverse streets of
Beijing. The 19-year-old was too young to be a part of the Olympic
games here seven years ago, and in his first visit to the city, it
appeared to be growing on him, and he was growing on the people.
As the brother of Olympic champion marathon runner, Haile
Gebrselassie, Ghirmay worked on his family farm before turning to
Athletics.
Since the revelations about the doping scandal, many have a sour taste
in their mouth when it comes to competition, however the Eritrean
condemns the practice and when it comes to cheating, even if it brings
you the gold, you are still the biggest loser.
One of the biggest advantages to being an athlete that competes around
the globe is that you get to see some of it. A new culture and place
like China may seem daunting for many at first, but after a while it
becomes easy to find home.
