From Louis Mazel, Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy Asmara
Today I attended the celebration at Bahti Meskerem Square for Eritrea’s National Athletics Team that returned to Asmara after participating in the 15th World Athletics Championships in Beijing. As I am a big follower of athletics both at the Olympics and World Championships (I have attended seven Olympic Games as well as the World Athletics Championships in Daegu , Korea in 2011) I very much looked forward to congratulating the Eritrean Team. The event was wonderful, with a colorful parade along Harnet Avenue and then a large and excited crowd packing the stands at Bahti Meskerem. Most of my diplomatic colleagues also attended the event. I was able to congratulate Ghirmay Ghebreselassie personally on his great triumph in Beijing and told him that I hoped he could do the same next year at the Olympic Games in Rio. I also congratulated Abrar Osman on his strong showing (6th place) in the men’s 10,000m race, which had a world class field. These athletes brought great honor to Eritrea and the U.S. Embassy wishes them continued success in representing their nation in the future.
