Should Africans celebrate american ‘independence’ day on July 04?
In 1776, the United States’ declaration of independence stated “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Regardless of those statements, the United States kept black people into slavery for another 200 years, until the second half of the 20th century. And until today, black people are still widely victim of white oppression in America.
Does July 4th make any sense to black people? What do you celebrate?
As a matter of comparison,white Americans celebrate Columbus as part of their glorious history, and Columbus is included in America glorious history. Should Amerindians accept that celebration just because it’s part of white American history? What would they be celebrating?
