*NUEW 35th Anniversary Celebration in New York (Tristate area)*
The Eritrean community in the Tristate area (New York, New Jersey,
Connecticut) vibrantly celebrated the 35th anniversary of the establishment
of the National Union of Eritrean women on Saturday March 14th 2015.
On the occasion Ms. Negesti Woldeselasie, Chairwomen of the NUEW in New
York, highlighted the achievements and determination of Eritrean women over
the past 35 years and the NUEW’s work in the empowerment of women and
women’s participation in the nation building efforts.
Ms. Tsegga Gaim, Director General at the NUEW on her part expressed the
emancipation of Eritrean women beginning at the struggle for independence
and their role in shaping the Eritrean society today. Ms. Tsega further
discussed NUEW’s achievements and the need for strengthened efforts in the
work of women’s empowerment both by members of the NUEW across the world as
well as through the solidarity of their male counterparts and other members
of the community. Furthermore she commended the works of NUEW in the
diaspora including funding building training centers for women in different
parts of Eritrea.
Ambassador Girma Asmerom expressed the Eritrean government’s commitment and
interminable support to the equality of women with men. As well as the
gravity women’s issue has in the multilateral forums and Eritrea’s
realization of women’s equality as a necessity to ensuring an equal and
liberated society, as early as 1970’s.
Ms. Freweini Tekeste, fighter who joined the struggle in 1977 shared a
profound reminiscence with respect to the unique challenges faced by women
fighters during the war for liberation and women fighters’ heroic steadfast
handle of those obstacles.
Additionally, many young people born and raised in the U.S. recited poems
and expressed words of support in English and Tigrina.
