March 8 and the 35th Anniversary of the Establishment of NUEW Celebrated Enthusiastically!
Seattle held a double celebration of March 8 International Women’s Day and the 35th Anniversary of the founding of the National Union of Eritrean Women with spirited solidarity and unity on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at the Eritrean Association Community Center in Seattle. The event was a joint collaboration of the ERITREAN ASSOCIATION IN GREATER SEATTLE AND MEMBERS OF NUEW which brought together the wider Eritrean community in the Seattle Metro area and beyond. It was a testimony to the unflinching and solemn determination of the Seattle Eritrean Diaspora to showcase their diverse talent, purpose and an unparalleled sense of unity in an evening filled with joy, comradery and togetherness. As usual, the children of “ሓደ ህዝቢ፡ ሓደ ልቢ፡ ጽኑዕ ሕድሪ” (HADE HIZBI, HADE LIBE and TSNU’E HIDRI) once again succeeded in putting together a program full of diversity of age, gender and talent all under one tent with a kaleidoscope of an evening packed with exhibits depicting the role of Eritrean Women before, during and after INDEPENDENCE. This was followed with a mouthwatering fare of authentic Eritrean cuisine and traditional musical entertainment not to mention the dance performances by our youth. In addition, there were keynote speakers from both organizations that highlighted the importance and significance of the role of women in traditional society, their unique role in the liberation struggle as well as their continuing full participation in today’s nation building. Our sisters from Portland, Oregon also graced us with their presence by travelling for more than three hours to share this important moment with us. Lastly, it was an honor to have Seattle’s first avowed Socialist City Council Member, Ms. Kshama Sawant and her staff member show up and expresses their promise to work with both men and women of the Eritrean Community and particularly with the women to promote good communication and mutual support.
Thanks goes to the coordinating committee. A very special thanks to the members of YPFDJ and PFDJ 2 for all their behind the scene as well as a front and center role in staging a successful celebration of March 8 and the 35th Anniversary of the establishment of NUEW.
