Asmara, 4 December 2015 - A public meeting was held at the Expo Hall in Asmara on the 3rd of December this week to commemorate International Day of the Disabled.
Senior government and PFDJ officials, members of the War Veterans Association , representatives of professional and civil society organizations and other invited guests participated in the event.
Mr. Kahsai Gebrehiwot, the Minister of Labor and Human Welfare, pointed out that the commemoration of the event was vital for amplifying positive attitudes in the wider public towards the disabled. The Minister affirmed that consistent efforts exerted by the government to ensure the well being of the disabled are bearing tangible results. This is a responsibility that requires burden sharing by the local communities, Mr. Kahsai stressed.
Ms. Christine Umotoni, the UN Resident Coordinator in Eritrea, stated that the people of Eritrea and the government have a commendable culture in enabling the disabled to equally participate in all facets of social life.
The International Day of the Disabled is being observed for the 24th time at the international level and for the 20th time in Eritrea.
