About 15 years ago, Isaac Amanios, 60, joined his brother in the United States from Eritrea. And for the last 10 of those years, he worked as an inspector for the San Bernardino County public health department. He and his wife, who is a registered nurse, lived in Fontana, Calif., about 20 minutes from San Bernardino.
There they raised three children, now adults. On Thursday, Amanios’s extended family had gathered in their Fontana home, waiting for dreaded confirmation that he did not survive the attack on his department’s holiday party on Wednesday. “Yesterday when this happened to the center, I didn’t even pay attention until late in the afternoon,” said his brother Abraham Amanios, 70.
“It’s very unlikely that he survived,” Abraham said before the confirmation came. The family members have gone through “the process of denial,”
