Yohannes “Johnny” Mengsteab, 22, Selinsgrove
On the morning of Oct. 9, 2015, our beloved Yohannes “Johnny”
Mengsteab, passed away unexpectedly in his home in Selinsgrove at the
young age of 22.
Yohannes Mengsteab was born in Asmara, Eritrea on Nov. 8, 1992. He was
the second child, and the only son of Dr. Mengsteab Tesfayohannes
Beraki and Tselat Tesfazghi-Bahta. He was an exceptionally gifted,
intelligent and ambitious young man who touched the lives of everyone
he came across.
He graduated from Susquehanna University in 2013 with honors and very
high distinctions. Yohannes was an industrious and productive person
both as a student and as a young professional. Since his graduation,
he worked as an analyst and consulting intern at three internationally
known companies: Goldman Sachs, Deloitte Consulting and in one of the
Boston Consulting Group. He was also awarded with a certification to
practice as a Real Estate Financier under the sponsorship of Argus
Enterprise.
While a student at Susquehanna University, Yohannes was a very
energetic participant in the school’s extracurricular activities. He
was keen and entrepreneurial. In his freshman year, he participated in
a Central Pennsylvania Regional Key Stone Business Ideas Competition
and won third prize. In addition, he was an active member of the
Susquehanna University Enactus Enterprising, the president of SU
Investment Club, a member of the Economics Honors Society, Social
Studies Honors Society and Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honors Society.
He was also in the SU Honors Program as well as a University Scholar
throughout his four-year study. In his previous home of Waterloo,
Canada, he was an alumni of St. Luke Catholic Elementary School and
St. David Catholic Secondary School. As an honor student, he
participated in the Ontario Regional Venture Investment Competition,
where he won third prize.
He is survived by his parents Tselat Tesfazghi-Bahta and Dr. Mengsteab
Tesfayohannes-Beraki and his sisters, Harerta and Ruth Mengsteab. He
leaves behind aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, acquaintances,
colleagues, professors and mentors, all who will cherish his memory.
The viewing will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Pius X
Catholic Church, Selinsgrove followed by the funeral Mass at 11 with
the Rev. Fred Wangwe A.J. officiating.
Burial will take place at Salem Lutheran Cemetery at noon.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by V. L. Seebold Funeral Home,
601 N. High St., Selinsgrove.
