Justice, Defence and Security Minister Shaw Kgathi says Botswana has
no intention of granting political asylum to 10 members of the
Eritrean football squad refusing to go back to their home country
after a match earlier this week.Kgathi told Yarona FM News that there
are procedures to follow when applying for asylum.
He added that the Botswana government would request the Botswana
Football Association to ensure that the players return to Eritrea as
soon as possible.
“It’s simple. They must go back home. You don’t come to a country to
play football, lose and then say you want political asylum, no! There
are proper steps to take and they can do that from their home
country,” said Khathi
The Eritrean Movement for Democracy of Human Rights representative
Adane Ghebremsekel said they had engaged lawyer Dick Bayford to assist
in blocking the removal of the Eritrean team from Botswana.
Ghebremsekel was confident that the Botswana government would grant
the players the asylum they are seeking.
The players are seeking political asylum in Botswana, arguing that
they fear for their lives after returning to Eritrea where they say
their government subjects them to human rights abuses.
Bayford said further consultations are taking place to interdict the
forced removal of the players.
