Family of Eritrean killed during Beersheba attack not eligible for
benefits because he was illegal
The family of Haptom Zarhum, the Eritrean migrant who was mistaken for
a terrorist and shot to death during a terror attack in Beersheba on
Sunday, will not be eligible to receive the benefits granted to
relatives of terror victims, the Defense Ministry and National
Insurance Institute announced Wednesday.
The law holds that only Israeli residents, citizens or others who
entered the country legally are eligible for such benefits.
The joint statement added that people wounded in terror attacks who
are not eligible for benefits can turn to a special committee which
will weigh the individual case and decide if benefits will be paid in
exception to the law. In the case of Zarhum, the Defense Ministry and
National Insurance Institute have already decided to bring the case up
for discussion at a special committee meeting that was set to meet in
the near future.
