Eritrea’s government rejected the United Nations decision to extend sanctions against the Horn of Africa country for another year, saying allegations that the state supports Islamist militants are false.
The sanctions, which include asset freezes and travel bans on Eritrean individuals and entities, are “unwarranted,” the Foreign Ministry said in an e-mailed statement.
“The United Nations Security Council should drop its case against Eritrea and rescind the sanctions which were unjust in the first place,” it said.
The sanctions were imposed against Eritrea in December 2009 after the government was accused of sending 2,000 troops to Somalia to support al-Shabaab, the al-Qaeda-linked group that’s been waging an insurgency against the government since 2006.
