This paper analyzes the evolution of Turkey’s migration laws, policies and practices and how Ankara's relations with the EU have impacted them. Among other things, the paper's author argues that 1) over the last two decades Turkey has transformed from a source country of immigrants and asylum seekers into a transit county for those heading towards Europe; 2) Turkey’s role as a transit country has become inextricably linked with its aspirations to join the EU; and 3) Ankara has made significant strides in creating a fully functioning migration and asylum management system.........................
