Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Russian authorities were ready to discuss potential 'safe zones' in Syria with US colleagues, while speaking at a joint press conference with his Eritrean counterpart Osman Saleh Mohammed, in Moscow, Monday.
SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): "We share a common approach to the situation in the Middle East and North Africa region, including Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, in regard to joint fight against international terrorism. The terrorism threat has been spreading out to the south, including Central, West and East Africa."
SOT, Osman Saleh Mohammed, Eritrean Foreign Minister (English): "Our two countries are keen to grow and deepen cooperation in many areas including trade, investment, services, agriculture and education as well as in the political and diplomatic areas."
SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): "As for establishing 'safe zones' in Syria, together with our American colleagues we will elaborate on this matter. This issue differs from those already discussed in the previous stages of the Syrian crisis, in particular from those ideas which stipulated formation of an alternative Syrian government and its use as a basis for overthrowing the regime power."
