KHARTOUM, Sudan – The body of one of 12 Egyptian fishermen who went missing in the Red Sea three days ago has been found, the Sudanese army announced late Tuesday.
Sudanese army spokesman Ahmed al-Shami told Anadolu Agency that the fisherman’s body had been found in the Kanfia area between Sudanese and Eritrean territorial waters.
”A boat dispatched by the Sudanese maritime authorities discovered one of the bodies of the 12 lost fishermen in the Kanfia area,” the spokesman confirmed.
The body, he added, had since been taken to a hospital.
On Sunday, two survivors were found on a small island in the Red Sea.
The following day, the Sudanese authorities said two army helicopters were combing Sudanese territorial waters, especially the area near the border with Eritrea, in hopes of finding the remaining fishermen.
According to al-Shami, the Egyptian, Saudi and Yemeni maritime authorities have now joined the search for the remaining 11 missing fishermen.
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, for his part, has voiced his concern, ordering Egypt’s foreign affairs ministry to exert all possible efforts to ascertain the lost fishermen’s fate.
The boat that had been carrying the fisherman — or the wreckage thereof — has yet to be found, al-Shami said.
“Despite close coordination between the Sudanese, Egyptian, Saudi and Yemeni maritime authorities, the boat itself remains missing,” the spokesman said.
The Zinat al-Bahr, an Egyptian vessel carrying 14 fishermen, went missing last week, when, according to Egyptian reports, it set out from a port in Sudan’s Red Sea province to conduct fishing activities in international waters.

Sudanese Navy retrieves body of 1 of 12 missing Egyptian fishermen
The fishermen were lost when their vessel sunk near the Sudanese-Eritrean border on Saturday
The Sudanese Navy recovered the body of one of the Egyptian fishermen who was aboard a fishing boat that sank in Sudanese territorial waters on Saturday.
A rescue launch team managed to retrieve the body on Tuesday from the Red Sea waters near Khor Nawarat. Previous search missions, a Sudanese aerial search and another inspection by the Egyptian Navy failed to find any of the 12 missing fishermen or the wreck of the boat.
The fishing vessel Zainat Al-Bahrain sunk near the Sudanese-Eritrean border Saturday while carrying 14 fishermen. Two fishermen were rescued on Saturday.
The body of the fisherman was transported to Port Sudan hospital, according to state news agency MENA. His identity is yet to be revealed.
The Sudanese authorities said search efforts will continue for the rest of the missing fishermen.
