Eritrean charged with locking his former girlfriend inside her apartment, slightly injuring her
A 25-year-old Eritrean man was taken to court today and charged with locking his former girlfriend in her apartment after she told him she wanted to end their relationship on Valentine’s Day.
Jamal Osman Humed, 25, from Eritrea, was charged with holding the woman against her will, forcing her to do things against her will and slightly injuring her.
Sources said the man had been in a relationship with the Maltese woman for the past year and a half and had become infatuated with her. When she told him she wanted to break up with him he locked her in her Msida apartment. It is understood that the woman eventually managed to leave the apartment, only to be locked out by the accused, who took her key. Mr Humed allegedly hit her in the face during an ensuing argument.
The accused told the court that he understood Maltese and had the charges read out to him. But when Magistrate Monica Vella asked him if he was pleading guilty or not guilty to the charges, he insisted he did not understand what was being said and requested an Arabic speaking translator. He also kept asking why the woman was not present. The Magistrate warned the accused against lying and wasting the court’s time.
He eventually pleaded not guilty.
Legal aid lawyer Joseph Mizzi said he was requesting bail since the accused was pleading not guilty. Inspector Gabriel Micallef, prosecuting, said bail should be denied. He said the next time could be a homicide call.
Bail was denied and Mr Humed was remanded in custody.
