On Saturday, March 19, 2016, Dr. Tesfay Aradom and local Boston YPFDJ
Chapter held an enriching talk on culture & identity for local Eritrean
youth. The discussion began with a short presentation from Dr. Aradom,
highlighting the Eritrean diasporic experience from the migration out of
Eritrea post-Eritrean-Ethiopian war up until the development of first and
second generation Eritrean youth. Questions that arose include, how do
youth identify with Eritrea? Do they consider themselves Eritrean, American
or both? Further discussion transpired exploring the individual experiences
by Eritrean youth growing up abroad including confusion, racism and
everyday struggles with public perception and identity. Dr. Tesfay wrapped
up his workshop with a 14-question survey distributed to the youth to
further explore the nuances of their Eritrean-American cultural identity in
order to inform his paper to be presented at an international conference in
Eritrea this July.
