Panama reports large migrant expulsions from Costa Rica
The Associated Press
PANAMA CITY -- Immigration officials in Panama are complaining that neighbouring Costa Rica pushed 250 migrants from Horn of Africa across its border without any co-ordination.
National Migration Service director Javier Carrillo says it's not even clear the Africans had entered Costa Rica from Panama in the first place. He says they'd been bused from northernmost Costa Rica south to Panama's border.
Panamanian officials say the migrants were from Eritrea, Somalia and Ethiopia.
Carrillo said Friday such large expulsions without a deportation process could constitute human rights violations.
Earlier in the week, Costa Rican authorities said more than 1,000 immigrants from Cuba and African nations forced their way into Costa Rica from Panama. Some were immediately forced back. It's not clear if any of the new deportees were part of that group.
