State-owned monopoly Eritrea Telecom (Eritel) has built 110 cellular masts covering around 85 percent of the national territory with CDMA and introduced 3G in 2014, transport and telecom minister Tesfa Selasie Berhane, said as he announced the company’s plans for this year. According to Agence Ecofin, the government will bring telecom to remote regions and use solar energy to power base stations to make the network fail safe in case of power cuts.
The minister also said telecom prices must come down to lessen consumers’ expenses, people must be trained to better respond to service faults and other incidents, and quality of service must improve. EriTel provides fixed, mobile and data service to around 500,000 subscribers in the country of over 5 million people.
