VN urges dialogue on Djibouti-Eritrea border dispute
23:03' 08/04/2009 (GMT+7)
VietNamNet Bridge - A Vietnamese diplomat has called upon Djibouti and
Eritrea to exercise restraint, expeditiously implement the UN Security
Council's Resolution 1862 (2009) and engage in dialogue to defuse
tension with a view to attaining a mutually acceptable settlement.
The Representative of Vietnam to the UN Security Council, Ambassador Le
Luong Minh, delivered this call at the council's consultation regarding
the Djibouti-Eritrea border dispute in New York on April 7.
Minh raised his concern about the tension at the border between Djibouti
and Eritrea, saying that the suspension of diplomatic relations between
the two countries has hampered bilateral efforts to ease the tension.
He affirmed Vietnam's support for the continued mediation efforts
undertaken by the African Union, the Arab League, the Organisation of
the Islamic Conference aimed at finding ways to end the dispute.
The ambassador also suggested that the Secretary General, in
coordination with regional stakeholders, continue to use his good
offices to develop confidence-building measures and engage both parties
in dialogue with a view to finding a peaceful solution to the
Djibouti-Eritrea border dispute in conformity with the fundamental
principles of international law and the UN Charter.
