VISIT OF THE INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT OF VMY TO ERITREA(March 4-16, 2009)
On March 4-16, 2009, Yasmine Cajuste (International President) visited
the Association in Eritrea. On March 6-8 she participated in the 1st.
VMY National Assembly in Dekemhare. She shared this Assembly with the
Visitor of the CM, the Visitatrix of the DC, and about 120
representatives of the 14 groups of the country (lay members and
Advisors). They reflected on the National Statutes, "Mary and VMY", and
"Our Service and Mission Nowadays". VMY Eritrea elected its new National
Council. It was a very nice experience that took place in an atmosphere
full of enthusiasm, leadership and sense of membership of the lay
people.
After the Assembly, the International President, the National Advisors
and a lay member visited several groups of the Association in Keren,
Hebo, Segheneyti and Asmara. Thus they could deepen in the formation and
share celebration moments as well as the traditional "coffee ceremony".
Yasmine made the most of her visit through the dioceses to meet the
Bishops of Asmara and Keren; to dialogue to the Visitor, the Visitatrix,
the Vincentian Family and the seminarians (CM and DC) and to know the
country.
Two meaningful moments of the visit have been the pilgrimage to "Ngdet
in Mariam Dearit" and the stay in Hebo. Close to Keren, "Mariam Dearit"
is the most famous Marian Sanctuary of the country. The wooden statue of
the Virgin Miraculous was brought by the first Daughters of Charity and
it is found within a tree trunk. Hebo was the starting point of the
evangelizer action of St. Justin de Jacobis (1800-1860). It is also the
place where his remains lay. This great Apostle from Abyssinia (today
Ethiopia and Eritrea) is deeply well-liked in this country because it
owes its evangelization and catholic faith to him
Yasmine had the chance to celebrate the Feast of St. Louise with the
communities of Hebo and Asmara. On Monday March 16, she participated in
a lunch with the poor organized at the Provincial House of the DC. It
was an additional occasion to honour Christ in our "Lords and Masters":
"in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of
mine, you did it to me" (Mt 25, 40).
This visit of formation and motivation has been a very enriching
experience for all of us. The Vincentian Family in Eritrea count on our
prayers to continue living the Vincentian ideal faithfully, in a country
that is living difficult social economical circumstances and moments. We
hope the young in Eritrea may grow and continue being faithful in their
commitments to the Association and the poor. May they be Light of the
World and Salt of the Earth!
