Arusei claims third Berlin title
Peninah Arusei became the first woman to win the BIG 25 kilometres road
race three times today when lowering her course record in Berlin.
The Kenyan, who went through the first 10km in a blistering 31 minutes
18 seconds, narrowly missed the world record by romping home in a time
of 1hr 22min 31sec.
"It is a pity, because if I would have known that it was that close I
could have broken it," she said.
Arusei, who comfortably broke her year-old course record of 1:24:10,
added: "I will come back next year to give it another try.
Furtuna Zegergish from Eritrea and Kenya's Caroline Cheptonui also beat
that mark with times of 1:22:57 and 1:23:43 respectively.
Arusei's compatriot, Matthew Koech, also produced a world leading
performance of the year to win the men's race in 1:13:24.
Like Arusei, Koech had been on world record schedule to better the mark
Paul Kosgei achieved when clocking 1:12:45 on the fast Berlin course
five years ago.
"Nonetheless I am very happy with my race," said Koech, whose team-mates
Kosgei and Luke Kibet followed him home in 1:14:35 and 1:15:31.
