On Saturday May 23 2009, Eritreans from Atlanta and vicinity celebrated the 18th Independence Day of this young and courageous nation. The celebration was a culmination of unprecedented display of co-operation between all Eritrean organizations and the Eritrean National Holiday Organizing Committee. The event was a tremendous success that reinforced the unity of the Eritrean people against special interest groups who employ unscrupulous methods in their attempt to destroy the harmony of the Eritrean people.
As with all Eritrean events in Atlanta , the youth displayed unrelenting dedication and hard work in organizing, planning and coordinating the event. The Eritrean National Holiday Organizing Committee took this opportunity to highlight to the guests that the youth were the foundation by which independence was achieved and it is the youth that will help build a prosperous and peaceful Eritrea . Building on the theme of the night, the event was highlighted with a ceremony that honored high school and higher education graduating class of 2009. The graduates were presented with certificates that were signed by HE Ambassador Girmai Gebremariam.
