The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, also gave briefings
regarding action plans and advance preparations for the rainy season. In
this respect, he explained that the Azmera rains this year were well below
that of the previous year, and reminded the administrative regions to
concentrate more on those reliable areas already identified and the ones in
which the water resource potentials and infrastructure facilities are well
in place. To this end, the Minister stressed that more emphasis should be
given to the task of raising productivity. He further indicated that select
seeds have been made ready for the realization of the set objective.
In recognition of the fact that there should not prevail undue reliance on
weather forecast information obtained from other international and regional
meteorological agencies, the meeting underlined the urgency of establishing
a viable National Meteorological Agency, as well as weather monitoring
stations and information centers in all regions of the country. In this
connection, the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, Regional Administrators
and Operation Zone Commanders agreed on the need for introducing the
necessary technology that would enable prompt gathering and analyzing data.

diversion schemes, the potable water supply provision in villages and urban
centers, the putting in place of the necessary agro-industrial
pre-requisites as well as the budget required.
The meeting further assessed the finalization of construction and repair of
the already existing agricultural infrastructure, the progress registered
and its dependability for the upcoming rainy season in the Gash-Barka
region. It also discussed the tasks undertaken as regards the allotment and
re-distribution of farmlands in the region.
Besides, the meeting closely reviewed the accomplishments registered on the
part of major agricultural projects in Gash-Barka concerning the
preparations already made, including that of water diversion schemes and
related activities, coupled with the land areas envisaged for rain and
drip-fed irrigation, in addition to the agricultural and pre-industrial
processes.
The meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, Regional Administrators and
Operation Zone Commanders further conducted in-depth discussion on the
detailed information compiled in the Central region regarding the tasks
accomplished as regards farm plots readied for cultivation on the basis of
integrated technology at governmental and individual level, as well as the
plots already ploughed through employing traditional means, coupled with
soil and water conservation activities in those areas fit for the
cultivation of strategic crops, in addition to the activities connected with
the distribution of natural fertilizer to villages and the condition of
micro-dams in the region.
Furthermore, it reviewed the works accomplished pertaining to the leveling
and distribution of land and the construction of water diversion schemes, as
well as the initiatives taken in the processing and distribution of fish
products in the Northern Red Sea region.
Likewise, after assessing the tasks undertaken in the Southern Red Sea
region towards making the fisheries sector live up to expectations in
reinforcing endeavors aimed at ensuring food security, the meeting decided
that concerted endeavors be made, and thus enhance the supply and
