Military face to face in northern Djibouti
The Armed Forces Chief of Staff, General Zakaria Cheikh Ibrahim,
strongly criticised the FRUD rebels in a speech that he made in the
Somali language and was carried on the radio and TV on 11 June.
He qualified them as people who had refused two successive peace
agreements and promised to squash them nine times if need be. Applying
this strategy, two Djibouti military columns from Obock and Tadjourah
combed through Monts Mabla on 14 June.
The servicemen carrying out this operation included some soldiers who
had just undergone training in Ethiopia. The simultaneous presence of
the army and the FRUD on Monts Mabla has not, to date, resulted in any
clashes – in spite of the fact that the two groups are near enough to
see each other through binoculars.
