Politics 6/25/2009 5:36:00 PM
CAIRO, June 25 (KUNA) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit met
here Thursday his visiting Eritrean counterpart Osman Saleh on the
latest situations in Somalia and Sudan's Darfur.
During their meeting, they exchanged views on security and stability in
the Horn of Africa, together with peace efforts for Darfur and Somalia,
Spokesman for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry Hosam Zaki told reporters
following the talks.
They also discussed Egyptian efforts to achieve inter-Palestinian
reconciliation and to push forward the Middle East peace process, as
well as the outcomes of US President Barack Obama's recent visit to
Cairo, he said.
For her part, Egypt's Assistant Foreign Minister for African Affairs
Mona Omar told reporters that both foreign ministers had discussed a
recent call by the Somali government for Arab and African troops to be
deployed in Somalia to tranquilize the country.
But, he said the problem was that several Somali tribes had voiced
opposition to such a called-for troop deployment.
She quoted the Eritrean minister as dismissing allegations that his
country was backing Somali rebels. (end) nwr.hw.mt
